Hair oil is not indispensable for hair or scalp health. In Southeast Asia, we frequently use different kinds of hair oil. There is a myth prevalent in this part of the world that hair oil promotes hair growth, but there is no proven scientific record to corroborate this idea.
Actually, if we analyze our skin’s histopathology, we will find that each hair follicle is surrounded by two types of glands. One is the sweat gland, which produces sweat, and the other is the sebaceous gland, which produces sebum. Sebum is a kind of natural oil that our body produces on its own. Continuous overuse of oil might block the ducts through which these glands excrete sebum onto our skin surface, leading to the accumulation of excessive amounts of sebum. This can cause conditions such as seborrhoeic dermatitis and acne. Once a girl or boy attains puberty, these sebaceous glands get activated, so ideally, there is no need to use hair oil after the age of puberty.
Hair oil helps in conditioning the scalp. In some scalp disease conditions, like lichen planus or scalp psoriasis, hair oil helps in moistening the scalp surface and prevents dryness. There are a few hair serums that increase the underlying blood circulation of the hair follicles and thereby improve hair growth, but these hair serums are basically combinations of different medicated products; they are certainly not hair oil. At HairElixir, we often use these kinds of hair serums.
